What is ICC

Unfortunatly there is no totaly international certification system for pleasure crafts in the world. In Sweden the swedish certificates in the so called blue book are valid and in many other countries like Greece and Croatia they will let you rent a boat on the swedish certificates (Förarintyg and for the bigger yachts Kustskepparintyg).

BUT France and Spain for example will ask for ICC when renting a boat.

What is ICC?
The ICC is an international certification, that proves that you have the skills required to master of a recreational boat. It is issued on a plastic card with photo and needs to be reissued every 5 years. The swedish certificates do not need to be reissued .You can apply for ICC through Sjösportskolan only if you have obtained your certificates via Sjösportskolan. The Swedish certificates such as Förarintyg ( Inshore Diploma ), Kustskepparintyg ( Coastal Diploma ), Boat practice, VHF (SRC) and Canal Certificate apply in Sweden these certificates will be put in the "Blue Book" issued by NFB. Many countries accept these certificates in the blue book in their countries ( e.g. Greece and Croatia), but less often in e.g. Spain and France.

The ICC is part of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Resolution 40, which deals with inland waterways and coastal waters. The minimum requirements are standardized, but the intention is that national driver's licenses for recreational boats can be used to demonstrate sufficient knowledge abroad.

NOTE that each charter company decides for themselves what they require for you to rent a boat from them. Always check what the charter company you are renting a boat from requires a certificate of education.

Where does the ICC apply?

The ICC is accepted in many countries in Europe. Even in countries that do not officially require or accept the letter of authorization, it may be needed or useful. For example. if you are going to rent a boat or to show that you have an official license. In Sweden, however, the ICC does not apply as a certificate of competency, but the Coastal Yachtmaster Diploma is the qualification. These countries have ratified Resolution 40 and thus fully accept the ICC as a certificate of competency: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom. The following countries have not signed Resolution 40 but accept the ICC as a certificate of competency in their territory: France, Italy, Poland. NOTE that your ICC needs to be renewed every 5 years. This is easily done via the web.
