VHF
VHF (very high frequency) radios are commonly used on ships for communication with other ships, ports, and coast guard stations. The VHF radio frequency band is between 156 and 174 MHz, and is used for short-range communication, typically up to 20-30 nautical miles. VHF radios on ships are used for a variety of purposes, including:
- Making ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore calls
- Coordinating with other vessels in the vicinity, such as during a convoy or when navigating through crowded waters
- Communicating with ports and harbours for docking, departure, and other purposes
- Broadcasting weather and navigational warnings
- Communicating with the coast guard in case of emergency
VHF radios on ships must be certified and meet international standards set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). They are typically operated by licensed mariners and are an important tool for ensuring the safety and efficient operation of ships at sea.
